Campbell College Belfast Phase 2 - Building for the Future

TODD Architects have been engaged by @campbellcollege Belfast to assist in their Building for the Future (BFTF) masterplan, with the aim of providing unique and exemplar educational accommodation.

Phase 1, now complete, saw the comprehensive refurbishment and extension of the college's sports complex.

Phase 2 is currently in progress, with a targeted completions summer 2025. Works include:
- Selectively demolish poor-quality facilities
- Construct new, purpose-built changing rooms
- Adaptively reuse the squash courts, converting them into flexible learning spaces and a bouldering facility
- Refurbish the sports hall, upgrading the thermal envelope and modernising the interior

When complete, the building will offer high quality facilities for all pupils, with a courtyard and visual link through to the Foxes Field rugby pitch.

We look forward to the successful delivery of Phase 2, which will mark the culmination of this transformative project for Campbell College Belfast.

Transforming Education: Campbell College Belfast’s Sports Complex Renovation

We are proud to showcase the remarkable transformation of Phase 1 of @campbellcollege Belfast's 1970s sports complex as part of their Building for the Future (BFTF) masterplan.

𝘉𝘦𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘦:
The original 1970s sports building was an uninsulated structure housing a swimming pool, squash courts and changing facilities. The building had poor energy efficiency and lacked modern accessibility features. There was no visual connection to the adjacent rugby pitch.

𝘈𝘧𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘗𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘦 1:
Through sustainable adaptive reuse, the existing pool building has undergone a major refurbishment. The swimming pool has been infilled, the floor level reduced, and the space converted into a modern fitness suite. Crucially, the thermal envelope has been significantly upgraded to improve the building's energy efficiency, reducing its carbon footprint.

By leveraging the existing building structure and focusing on sustainable retrofits to this Brownfield Site, this project demonstrates our commitment to environmentally responsible design.

Phase 2 is now underway, set for Summer 2025 completion.

Our Dublin Studio was commissioned to execute Jacobs Engineering’s design concept, providing design and accessibility consultation for their new 24,000 sq ft office space on the 2nd floor of the Termini Building in Dublin.

Working closely with Jacobs and @somerville_fitout we transformed the space into a dynamic, employee-centric environment that reflects Jacobs’ innovative spirit.

The office features an open-plan layout with abundant natural light, supporting different work styles and team dynamics—from small pods for quick conversations to larger rooms for team collaborations. Flexible boardrooms with movable partitions allow for adaptable use of space, while dedicated quiet areas support focused work.

A key highlight is the stunning 15ft wide moss wall, which adds a vibrant, natural element to the space, promoting well-being and connecting employees to the natural world. 🌿

TQ Student Village gets Planning Approval

We're thrilled to announce that the TQ Student Village, Belfast's largest purpose-built student accommodation scheme, has secured planning approval! This landmark decision marks a pivotal moment for the city's urban development and sends a strong signal about continued investment in the iconic Titanic Quarter.

We've worked closely with @watkinjonesgroup PLC and Lacuna Developments to create a truly transformative development. The TQ Student Village will bring over 1,000 high-quality, purpose-built student homes to the heart of Belfast's @titanicquarter, redefining student living in the city.

Our design for the TQ Student Village is rooted in the rich maritime heritage of the site, merging contemporary architecture with the area's historical significance. The development follows a perimeter scheme, creating strong established edges that form roads and public spaces, while a generous, secure courtyard at its core provides private landscaped amenity space for residents.

Community is at the heart of this project. We've designed vibrant communal areas that foster social interaction and create a sense of belonging. The TQ Student Village isn't just about providing accommodation; it's about creating a thriving, integrated community that enhances the student experience and contributes to the ongoing transformation of the Titanic Quarter into a dynamic, mixed-use neighbourhood.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of our design. The TQ Student Village is set to achieve some of the highest sustainability standards in the city, targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating. This car-free scheme incorporates rooftop solar panels, carbon-free heating using air source heat pumps and heat recovery units, and rainwater recovery systems. A green travel fund will promote sustainable transit between the site and universities, further reducing the development's environmental impact.

The approval of this multi-million pound project is a testament to Belfast's growing appeal as a vibrant, forward-thinking city.

The end of a long journey!….we were delighted, with Contour Planning, to have recently submitted a planning application, on behalf of our clients AMAFHH, for a major new mixed use development at Staples Corner in north London.

The scheme incorporating a 22 storey tower and three basements, combining employment space, with an hotel and conference/community facilities.

The tower, shrouded in a delicate aluminium exo-skeleton, will be a dynamic visual marker for traffic approaching London from the M1.

Planning approval has been granted for the new Pae

Planning approval has been granted for the new Paediatric Department at Altnagelvin Hospital, Derry. This marks a significant milestone in our ongoing collaboration with the Western Trust, and we are excited to bring this project to life.

The state-of-the-art facility will be housed within the refurbished ground and first floors of the existing Treatment Wing and will feature two double-story extension links as well as secure, accessible landscaped courtyards and external play areas. The thoughtfully designed space will cater to the unique needs of young patients and their families.

The Outpatients' Department will include a range of Consultation Rooms, an Acute Paediatric Assessment Unit, Day Case Facilities, a Sensory Room, and a dedicated Adolescent Area. The Inpatients' Department will feature 25 single bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, as well as a three-bedroom ward.

Opened last month, this purpose-built shared space stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design in fostering community cohesion and social progress.

The new Shankill Shared Women’s Centre offers a versatile space dedicated to uniting women from diverse backgrounds in this historically divided area of Belfast. Our vision was to create a space that transcends physical and social boundaries. Situated strategically between two communities, we've designed a structure that serves as a beacon of hope and collaboration, with its open, accessible design symbolising a bright future for the area.

Featuring a central courtyard, multifunctional spaces, a café, main hall, childcare facilities, education rooms, and a youth area with panoramic city views, the building has been designed around a central external courtyard and is largely 2 storey with a three storey ‘tower’ strategically positioned to act as a beacon and to announce the main entrance

Funded by the EU PEACE IV program, this project highlights our commitment to creating inclusive, accessible spaces that foster positive social change. From education and childcare to health and well-being services, the centre will serve women and families across communities for years to come.

We're proud to contribute to Belfast's 'peace corridor', creating a space that will empower women and foster cross-community relationships for generations to come.

Exciting news from Swaffham, Norfolk! We've secured planning approval for our latest Specialised Supported Housing project.

Our design features a two-storey apartment building housing 12 spacious 50m² apartments, along with a communal lounge, staff office and overnight quarters. Complimenting this are four bungalows, all arranged to frame a central landscaped green space.

We've embraced the local architectural character, using traditional red brick and pan tiles, with soft sage green windows adding a touch of nature. Distinctive entrance porches, formed by brick piers and white cast stone lintels, provide a welcoming approach to each home.

This thoughtful design aims to create a comfortable, supportive environment that feels like home. We're proud to contribute to inclusive housing solutions that enhance quality of life.

We're thrilled to announce that our Riddel Hall project for Queen's University Belfast has been shortlisted for the Brick Awards 2024. This project, which has already garnered several accolades, showcases our commitment to blending historic preservation with modern functionality.

The expansion of Riddel Hall, a Grade II listed building housing Queen's Business School, presented a unique challenge in harmonising state-of-the-art facilities with an historic environment. Our team at TODD Architects chose Wienerberger's Mellow Red Sovereign Stock brick for its subtle variations in colour, tone and texture, ensuring a seamless integration with the original "Belfast Brick" construction. This waterstruck brick adds a nuanced consistency to the project while respecting the site's heritage.

The brick selection process involved close collaboration with Belfast City Council Historic Environment Division, comparing samples with the original Riddel Hall building ensuring the final selection was rooted in context and sympathetic with its surroundings.

The result is a stunning building that not only meets the university's growing needs but also achieves high sustainability standards, aiming for BREEAM Excellent rating in line with Queen's University's commitment to net-zero carbon goals.

Located in Belfast's historic Linen Quarter, this exemplary purpose-built student accommodation showcases a thoughtful design that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings. The 15-storey structure comprises a five-storey podium aligned with Bruce Street and a ten-storey tower set back from the street, respecting the area's existing architecture while adding a contemporary touch.

The carefully chosen Ibstock Chester Red Blend brick pays homage to the neighbouring Victorian warehouses, while intricate brickwork detailing creates a modern dialogue with the district's rich architectural heritage. The facade's design, featuring a distinct base, middle and top, mirrors the characteristic order of the Linen Quarter's buildings. Thoughtful window arrangements and metal detailing further enhance the structure's visual appeal, resulting in a high-quality student living space that sets a new standard for purpose-built student accommodation in Belfast.

We're excited to announce that our Queens Business School's Student Hub project has been shortlisted for the Concrete Awards 2024!

This four-storey facility showcases concrete's versatility in both structure and design. The building features exposed in-situ concrete interiors with premium RECKLI formwork finishes, while distinctive wetcast concrete panels and colonnades define the exterior. Our innovative structural solutions harmonise seamlessly with the architectural vision, allowing the building to integrate sensitively with its surrounding mature parkland and adjacent Listed building. Moreover, concrete's thermal mass plays a crucial role in achieving the project's BREEAM Excellent rating.

Queens Business School's Student Hub demonstrates how concrete can form both the core and character of a building, creating a robust yet elegant aesthetic. The project exemplifies the synergy between structural necessity and design vision, with concrete at its core. From the board-marked walls to the feature entrance colonnades, every element was meticulously detailed to achieve a calm, robust and understated aesthetic.
